FOUNDING OF OSHIYIE

Nii Kwaku ?ffedzi Annoh was born in James Town (Ngleshi), Accra in the year 1823 by Nii Annoh a sojourner of James Town. In 1846, Nii ?ffedzi, the fisherman, tied the knot with Naa Amanua. As a result of this, he decided to move from his father's estate and settled along the coasts of Accra. He spent 10 years at Kroakan where he encountered fierce crocodile attacks whenever the Sakumo river overflowed its banks.

In 1856, he moved further to a place he named “Nwieye”, meaning the end. Three years later he moved further to “Mm?amm?asha”, also known as “Mimpe mihu asem” meaning, "I don’t want trouble". All this happened after his former place “Nwieye” had been burnt down due to an accident that occurred during one of his night fishing activities.

In 1866, Nii Kweku ?ffedzi settled at the present site which was satisfactory to him and his father Nii Annoh. During the father’s visit to the son’s new place of abode, he said to his son, “?ffedzi, efi dzi wukrono, wu asi ni yie paa!” meaning “?ffedzi, this time, you have built your town very well!” The name “Wuasiniyie” over time and mispronunciation transformed to the present name Oshiyie. The name ?ffedzi (and many other Oshiyie names) also has gone through the same process thus now being pronounced Afadi.

Nii Kwaku Afadi later married two wives in addition to Naa Amanua, all of whom bore children. The first sons of each of his wives were:

  • Apatu Yiiyi
  • Yiiyi Teng
  • Yiiyi Ansah

  • The above named sons are the heirs to the Nii Kwaku Afadi Stool under the stool name Nii Afadi Annoh.

    CONFLICT

In the year 1998, after the death of King Odom, the members of the Musumpra family organized themselves to crown another king from their family. It was not their place to select a person to be crowned king because they are not from the royal family – the Afadi Annoh family. This incited a misunderstanding between both families.

In 1999, the people of Oshiyie established different groups for battle because a wrong person had been chosen as a king from a family found nowhere. The people began to fight between the people of Annoh and Musumpra around 15th November, 1999 around 2:30pm. This resulted in the loss of lives and property. The house of Nii Afadi Annoh, the founder is one of the houses that was affected.
